Braintree is the second most dangerous medium-sized town in Essex and is the 31st most dangerous overall out of Essex’s 319 towns, villages, and cities. The overall crime rate in Braintree in 2020 was 97 crimes per 1,000 people. This compares poorly to Essex’s overall crime rate, coming in 20% higher than the Essex rate of 78 per 1,000 residents. For England, Wales, and Northern Ireland as a whole, Braintree is the 40th most dangerous medium-sized town, and the 549th most dangerous location out of all towns, cities, and villages.

In December 2020, Braintree was the worst medium-sized town in Essex for bicycle theft, with 4 crimes reported and a crime rate of 0.09 per 1,000 inhabitants. April 2020 was also a bad month for Braintree residents, when it was Essex’s most dangerous medium-sized town for burglary, recording 18 crimes at a rate of 0.40 per 1,000 residents. Braintree recorded 27 reports of drugs during November 2020, making its crime rate of 0.60 the worst medium-sized town for drugs in Essex that month.
